(Social) Realism: Indonesia

Rudolf Bonnet (1895 - 1978)

Johan Rudolf Bonnet (30 March 1895, Amsterdam - 18 April 1978, Laren) was a Dutch artist who lived much of his life in the town of Ubud on Bali, Indonesia. He was born into a Dutch Huguenot-descended family who had been bakers for many generations. He attended the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was invited to live in Ubud in 1929 by Cokorde Gede Raka Sukawati. He was forced to leave Bali in 1957 after he refused to sell a painting to President Soekarno; he was able to return 15 years later.

Mangu Putra
Within a short span of time since the beginning of his artistic career, Mangu Putra has caused more than a stir in his exhibitions throughout Indonesia. A graphic designer before turning into full-time painter in 1998, his paintings exude acuteness and a sensitivity to visual forms. The influence from his design background is further apparent in his technique and the execution of ideas on his canvasses, where strong lines, shapes and colours are composed in a mature and harmonious manner. In creating, Mangu Putra believes in absolute freedom in aesthetic expression. Even though the works of Mangu Putra possess certain distinctive characteristics, the artist seldom abides by one style of painting abstract, realistic, figurative. Painting to him is more importantly, a process of self-discovery and capturing of the spiritual essence of nature.
Mangu Putra's preferred choice of subject includes mountains, the wilderness, waters and fish, all of which point to a love of nature. These elements serve as metaphors in his commentary on the state of the natural environment and humanity.

World (Social) Realist Art (Index of Countries)
This blog page is part of an ongoing project by artist and part-time lecturer Caoimhghin Ó Croidheáin (http://gaelart.net/) to explore Realist / Social Realist art from around the world. The term Realism is used in its broadest sense to include 19th century Realism and Naturalism as well as 20th century Impressionism (which after all was following in the path of Courbet and Millet). Social Realism covers art that seeks to examine the living and working conditions of ordinary people (examples include German Expressionism, American Ashcan School and the Mexican Muralists).
